“In The Eyes of a Child”
Digital Core Studio Course (2024)
In this video remix, I aim to demonstrate the confusion that little girls are currently facing while growing up amidst the barrage of differing opinions on womanhood in modern America. They’re told they should be a certain way, but also be themselves, but also fight society’s standards, but also don’t fight them too hard, and fight them in a certain socially acceptable way, because you still need to have friends … Until finally, it becomes so confusing that the only clear thing is that they are not good enough. This confusion, leading to an inability to form one’s sense of self, is shown to negatively impact one’s mental health, especially in adolescence.
Throughout this piece, my goal is to show what it looks like to consume various pieces of media about womanhood from the eyes of a little girl, including the movie “Barbie” directed by Greta Gerwig, a documentary titled “What is a Woman?” by Matt Walsh, and a music video called “Woman’s World” from pop artist Katy Perry. The blinking effect between clips and during clips acts as a transition and also as a reminder to viewers throughout the content that little girls are viewing these contradictory and confusing videos. Additionally, the video clips are grainy and desaturated until the very end shot in Amanda Ferrera’s speech, where her character says “everything is your fault,” because that clip is the only clear thing to girls inside all of this chaos — should they rely on America’s media to improperly form their sense of identity.
“Bake It ‘Til You Make It: Chocolate Chip Cookies”
The La Salle Falconer (2021)
This video essay instructs viewers on how to bake chocolate chip cookies. Filmed and edited by me with a recipe given to me by my mother, this was published during the COVID-19 lockdown to encourage others to pick up baking — which is still one of my favorite hobbies!
